Packaging industry remains stable despite corona crisis
Particularly in the corona crisis, packaging assumes important functions in the supply of food, protective materials and medicines: it protects food from contamination, enables safe transport and ensures optimum shelf life of the products. "As many people are currently working from home and increasingly cooking at home, the demand for food packaging, for example, is rising by around 30%," reports Guido Aufdemkamp, Executive Director European Aluminium Foil Association, in the "Aluminium-ON-AIR" podcast. In contrast, the demand for industrial packaging is falling, so that companies are well able to meet the increased demand in the food sector and operate at almost full capacity, Aufdenkamp continues. As a result, the packaging industry is currently coming through the crisis in good shape, especially as the production and supply chains are largely intact. According to industry reports, some companies are expecting a decline in sales in the first quarter, but they can probably compensate for this with the strong economic performance of the previous year.
