Efficient machining of aluminium profiles
Aluminium windows, doors and façades are a trend the world over. They provide architects, planners and building sponsors with extensive functional, technical and design freedom. In particular, the technical requirements made on metal and façade construction companies are rising constantly.
In the manufacturing of aluminium-based profile systems the executing companies must work very efficiently to ensure good value for money. This process already starts with the sales pitch and/or planning and consulting talks with architects: here metal engineering companies today focus on consistent production and planning processes. This saves costs and simplifies the workflow along the entire value chain.
Therefore, connecting and dovetailing the individual construction steps and tasks is a key challenge for many façade contractors. Experts agree: digitalisation will make rapid progress in the engineering of such construction elements as windows, doors or façades. Technical data, plans, calculations as well as notes and other working documents must be available to all parties involved in the project at any time and on various devices.
Only once the digital planning process is complete will production data be transferred to manufacturing. To this end companies have state-of-the-art profile machining centres or complete manufacturing lines at their disposal. These are often modular and can be optimised for each job.
From BIM-compliant workflow …
Precision, speed and digital processes already largely fulfil the requirements made by BIM (Building Information Modelling), a method that is about to become established as a standard in the construction sector. Companies have to follow these planning and design processes that can be integrated into a digital construction workflow.
This is made possible by high-performance software capable of planning and calculating complex façades. Resource-saving and energy-efficient components and buildings are important aspects here which favour the use of window and façade systems made of aluminium. This approach also encompasses the collection and recycling of “waste” materials resulting from finishing. Even the re-use of façade materials is considered at the planning stage. With profile solutions offered by system vendors metal construction companies already have a large portfolio of forward-looking base products at their disposal.
Prior to the final production step at the workshop architects and building sponsors receive high-resolution imaging. Soon 3D visualisation will also form part of this digital standard. During the entire planning stage this procedure also simplifies costing: product changes and processing steps can be considered in the calculation without any interim steps.
…to system profiles
Once the architects’ planning data is given the green light and converted into production data high-performance profile machining centres start their job. Here, again, the possibilities of digitalisation are capitalised on: machines are automatically controlled, manufacturing processes are optimised and necessary finishing steps are coordinated with each other.
The system profiles are machined using such processes as sawing, drilling and milling or non-contact laser processes. Here the software even accounts for downstream installation by delivering the components in the correct order. At this point the experience and expertise of the workshop staff is called for again: they assemble the high-precision machined parts into ready-to-install components thereby ensuring high-quality just-in-time delivery at the site.
Construction applications at ALUMINUM 2018
The developments in prefabricated aluminium construction parts production will be featured at ALUMINIUM 2018. One in five of the approximately 1,000 exhibitors will display products and technical know-how for construction applications. An overview of innovative solutions will be provided by the guided trade fair tour on the theme “Building – Nachhaltiges und sicheres Bauen mit dem Werkstoff Aluminium” (Sustainable and Safe Building with Aluminium).
