NOVELIS: The development of sustainable solutions is our top priority
NOVELIS at ALUMINIUM 2018:
“The development of sustainable solutions is our top priority”
Interview with Emilio Braghi, Senior Vice President and President, Novelis Europe
Sustainability and recycling are key areas of focus at Novelis, and the concept of a circular economy is becoming ever more important to the world’s biggest aluminium recycling company. Emilio Braghi, Senior Vice President and President, Novelis Europe, explains what his company is doing to maintain the material cycle in our ALUMINIUM Interview.
Mr. Braghi, in your opinion, how will the aluminium market, and the market for rolled products in particular, develop over the medium term?
We expect positive trends in the market for rolled aluminium products to continue through the medium term, with continuous steady growth in our primary European business fields: ‘Cans’, ‘Specialities’ and ‘Automotive’.
Even so, we believe that huge overcapacities worldwide, and in China and particular, will impact the market in future, as will the recently imposed import duties. It is still too early to say exactly what form these changes may take.
In which segments do you see the greatest growth taking place?
We believe that the automotive sector, where the share of semi-finished rolled aluminium products is set to increase markedly by 2025, will experience particularly strong double-digit growth. Among other things, increasingly strict CO2 guidelines and the resulting desire of vehicle manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight, coupled with customer demand for driving performance, safety and design, will also play significant roles in powering this development.
In order to satisfy the automotive industry’s increasing demand for lightweight materials, we have been massively expanding our production in recent years. In fact, we have announced additional increases in capacity in our production lines in North America and China just this year.
Which topics are particularly pressing for your company at present and set to grow even further in importance in future?
Sustainability and recycling are top priority at Novelis, and they are given tremendous significance in every one of our business fields. Sustainable and resource-conserving construction, lightweight automotive construction, electromobility and environmentally friendly packaging are but a few of the themes that will continue to become more important in the marketplace. Novelis has responded, not only by developing new alloys with large recycling components for low-energy buildings, lightweight chassis constructions and aluminium containers, but also by establishing new circular economies with our customers.
Novelis is the world’s largest aluminium recycling company. What do you do to maintain the material cycle?
The development of sustainable solutions is the absolute top priority for us, whereby the concept of the circular economy is becoming ever more important. That is why we have been continuously expanding our recycling capacities and capabilities in recent years.
Just last year, Novelis reached a key milestone, as we increased our utilisation of recycled materials to 57 percent. Every year, we recycle approx. 65 billion used drinks cans – and products made from these materials are already on store shelves some 60 days later. We help our customers achieve their sustainability goals by collecting and recycling old metal.
In collaboration with Ford Motor Company, 90 percent of production scrap was collected and recycled – enough to produce another 30,000 F-150 chassis every month. Furthermore, our customer Jaguar Land Rover was able to return more than 50,000 tonnes of aluminium process scrap to the production process – equivalent in weight to 200,000 Jaguar chassis.
What can be done to further expand the use of recycled aluminium?
Novelis works along the entire recycling value chain to expand the use of recycled aluminium in all areas while continuously improving and expanding its recycling capabilities and solutions. We are also lending our support to special interest organisations worldwide, such as ‘Every Can Counts’ in Europe. We undertake to work with others to address the challenges facing the recycling industry and develop new initiatives aimed at improving recycling rates amongst consumers while promoting more sustainable behaviour.
What are your expectations for ALUMINIUM 2018?
ALUMINIUM is the only event where representatives of every one of our business fields are present. We relish the opportunity to present the full scope of what Novelis has to offer, and look forward once again this year to interesting talks with our customers and partners and the chance to come into contact with new target groups. ALUMINIUM is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to bring all the most important industry players throughout the value chain together in one place, and we will make the most of it.
What areas will you be spotlighting this October in Düsseldorf?
It goes without saying that we would rather not reveal too much right now, but lightweight construction and electromobility are important themes at this year’s ALUMINIUM, and we will be focusing on them as well.
